In the midst of a big studio cleanout in 2010, I nonchalantly applied some gouache paint onto a page of an old biology book that was destined for the trash. I really liked the result, so I ripped apart the rest of the book and kept painting; and a whole new series was born. Created as an experiment on my former science and chemistry books, I think of these small works as sketches or exercises but with their own merit as paintings.

Through vivid color and pattern, these works depict chemical compounds, sonic waves, visual data, botanical specimens, or biological cell structures. Others simply recall sitting on the porch of my family’s home during a summer thunderstorm. The discoloration from time and small tears are inherent qualities of the paper that elevate the pieces with textured layers and unique character. Some pages are soaked in red wine to yield a rosy or aubergine background tint.

With a foundation in biology, botany, pre-medical studies, and fractal geometry, I have translated my interest in science into works of art that are much smaller in scale than my paintings on canvas. Old and discarded books are renewed, transformed, and reinvented into new artwork as dynamic mixed-media color studies.
